ABOUT ME

Getting to your gate on time

While a new season is here, airport lines unfortunately aren’t easing up. From security to check-in, wait times continue to test even the most seasoned travelers. I feel for the employees who are working under these challenging conditions. While there’s no perfect fix, there are a few tools and strategies that can make a meaningful difference in getting to your gate in time.

Plan Ahead With Better Visibility

Apps like Flight Queue  can provide real-time estimates for security, immigration, and check-in lines, helping you better time your arrival. That said, I wouldn’t rely on it entirely. It’s a helpful guide, but not always accurate these days. Download your Airline App and your Airport App to track gate changes, cancellations, and airport notifications. While Transportation Security Administration offers helpful guidelines on TSA.gov, it does not currently track real-time wait times.

Fast-Track Your Way Through Security

A CLEAR+ membership remains one of the most effective ways to bypass long lines. At airports with CLEAR lanes, members are escorted to the front of the TSA PreCheck line, dramatically reducing wait times. For an even more seamless experience, CLEAR Conciergeis available at select airports, offering a dedicated escort from curbside through security, ideal for those looking for a truly effortless arrival. (An added bonus: CLEAR is now available at select stadiums and concert venues as well.)

Digital ID For Touchless Travel

Both United Airlines and Delta Air Lines now offer Digital ID programs in partnership with TSA. These allow eligible travelers to use facial recognition at participating airports to skip showing a physical ID and boarding pass at security and, in some cases, bag drop. Delta’s system currently provides the most seamless end-to-end touchless experience, while United participates at select airports. Enrollment requires a TSA PreCheck number, a valid passport, and a linked airline account. Along with Global Entry, which expedites arrival in the U.S., these help make the airport experience much more tolerable.

A Little Known Insider Advantage

There are a handful of U.S. airports that operate under private security programs rather than standard federal screening. These airports often experience more consistent operations and, at times, smoother throughput.

These include:

  • San Francisco International Airport
  • Kansas City International Airport
  • Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport
  • Glacier Park International Airport
  • Yellowstone Airport

While not a reason alone to choose an airport, it can be a helpful factor when planning routes.
